Choose your size

What size Hövding should I choose?

Collar size: Hövding is available in three collar sizes: Small (S), Medium (M) and Large (L). In terms of operation, it makes no difference whether your Hövding is tight or loose around your neck. Choose the size you find most comfortable.

Small is recommended for neck sizes of less than 36 cm (14¼ inches).
Medium is recommended for neck sizes of 34–42 cm (13½–16½ inches).
Large is recommended for neck sizes of 38–45 cm (15–17¾ inches).

Head size: All the collar sizes (S, M, L) are adapted to heads that are 52–59 cm (20½–23¼ inches) in circumference. Measure around your head horizontally from the centre of your forehead, where your head is widest.

Please note! Hövding 2.0 is adapted to and tested for neck sizes up to 45 cm (17¾ inches) and head sizes up to 59 cm (23¼ inches) in circumference. These are maximum dimensions that should not be exceeded.

What head size does Hövding fit?

All the collar sizes (S, M, L) are adapted to heads that are 52–59 cm (20½–23 inches) in circumference. Measure around your head horizontally from the centre of your forehead, where your head is widest.

Hövding 2.0 is adapted to and tested for head sizes up to 59 cm (23 inches) in circumference. A bigger head is also a heavier head, something that Hövding is neither tested nor approved for. This is therefore a maximum dimension that should not be exceeded.

Is there an upper or lower weight limit for wearing Hövding?

Hövding gives everyone the same protection whatever their body size.

The only limitation is that Hövding 2.0 is adapted to and tested for neck sizes up to 45 cm (17¾ inches) and head sizes up to 59 cm (23 inches) in circumference. A bigger head is also a heavier head, something that Hövding is neither tested nor approved for. These are therefore maximum dimensions that should not be exceeded.

Is there an upper age limit for wearing Hövding?

No. If you can still ride a bicycle, you can wear Hövding.

Can children wear Hövding?

No. Hövding has a lower age limit of 15.

We would have liked for Hövding to work for kids as well. Because Hövding has been developed with adult stuntpersons, it is based on data from the movement pattern of adults. Hövding also uses an activation and deactivation function that might be difficult for children to handle, since they are more spontaneous in their movements.

Wearing Hövding

How much does Hövding weigh?

approx. 650 g without the cover.

How waterproof is Hövding?

Hövding can be worn in the rain, but it should not be washed or immersed in water. The removable covers are washable. The collar can be cleaned carefully with a damp cloth.

Can I use Hövding when riding a moped, skiing, wearing inline skates, skateboarding, etc.?

No. Hövding is only intended to be worn when riding a bicycle. (Riding a bicycle here refers to cycling in urban environments and on main roads, but not extreme cycling such as BMX, off-road cycling, mountain biking and trick cycling.)

Can I use Hövding while riding on my friend’s handlebars or bicycle rack.?

Hövding is not tested for this situation. Apart from that, we also do not recommend it for reasons of safety.

Do I have to restrict my movements when wearing Hövding, so as not to trigger the airbag by mistake?

You can move in the same way as you usually do when riding your bicycle. You can also stop and pick something up off the ground without Hövding inflating.

There is a button on the zip tag that activates Hövding when it’s attached to the right-hand side of the collar. Similarly, Hövding is deactivated when you unclip the activation button. When Hövding is deactivated, the airbag can’t inflate.

Only activate your Hövding once you are wearing it, immediately before riding your bicycle. Hövding is designed to protect you while bicycling and should therefore be deactivated when you are not. See also How Hövding works.

Can I wear Hövding on any kind of bicycle?

Hövding is intended for bicycles of a standard design. Hövding 2.0 is also adapted for mini bicycles and folding bikes. Hövding is not intended for special bicycles such as tandems, unicycles, etc.

Hövding is only intended to be worn when riding a bicycle and is not designed for use when riding a moped, skiing, wearing inline skates or skateboarding. Riding a bicycle here refers to cycling in urban environments and on main roads, but not extreme cycling such as BMX, off-road cycling, mountain biking and trick cycling.

How do I know whether Hövding is on?

You’ll hear a sound and LEDs will light up at the front of the collar to tell you that Hövding is activated. When you deactivate Hövding, you’ll hear a different sound and the LEDs will go out.

How do I switch Hövding on and off?

There is an activation button on the zip tag. Once you have pulled up the zip, attach the button on the zip tag to the right-hand side of the collar. Your Hövding is now activated. Similarly, Hövding is deactivated when you unclip the button. When Hövding is deactivated, the airbag can’t inflate.

Only activate Hövding when cycling. Your Hövding is designed to protect you while cycling and it must, therefore, be deactivated when you are not cycling. See also How Hövding works.

Hairstyles, headgear, scarves, etc.

Can I wear earrings with Hövding?

Small earrings, such as studs or pearls, are fine. However, if you have big, dangly earrings, we recommend taking them off while you are riding your bike. Otherwise there is a risk they will come flying off if the airbag deploys. Big rings in your ears, where the ends are joined together, we also recommend taking of, as it may be painful if they are struck by the airbag.

Can I wear shawls or scarves together with Hövding?

When the airbag is triggered, the pressure splits open the upper seam of the collar, allowing the hood to inflate around your head. Because of this it is important that you always keep the area above this seam free, and do not cover it with a shawl or a scarf. However, wearing a shawl or a scarf outside or inside your Hövding is fine.

Can I wear a sweater or jacket with a hood together with Hövding?

Yes. You can either wear the hood down underneath Hövding, or up over your head inside Hövding. You must not wear the hood lying on top of Hövding or up over your head in such a way that it is covering Hövding. When the airbag is triggered, the pressure splits open the upper seam of the collar, allowing the airbag to inflate around your head. Because of this it is important that you always keep the area above this seam free.

Can I use headphones or a headset with Hövding?

Yes, but you need to avoid wearing your headphones around your neck, lying on top of Hövding. When the airbag is triggered, the pressure from the airbag splits open the upper seam of the collar, allowing the hood to inflate around your head. Because of this it is important that you always keep the area above this seam free.

Please note that even if the function of Hövding isn’t affected by you using headphones while riding your bike, this is something we do not recommend for reasons of safety.

Can I wear an ordinary cycle helmet or other head protection with Hövding?

No.

Can I wear a turban with Hövding?

It depends on the size of the turban. If it’s too big, it can get in the way and may impede the airbag inflating around the head. By “impede”, we mean it might take longer for the airbag to attain the right position around the head, or it might not reach all the way over the forehead.

If you are uncertain, send us a photo at info@hovding.com and we will be happy to advise!

Can I wear a headscarf with Hövding?

Yes. Always place your headscarf on the inside of Hövding. You must not wear the scarf lying on top of Hövding or folded up in such a way that it is covering both Hövding and your head. When the airbag is triggered, the pressure from the airbag splits open the upper seam of the collar, allowing the hood to inflate around your head. Because of this it is important that you always keep the area above this seam free.

Can I wear a hat or other headgear with Hövding?

Most hats and headgear work perfectly with Hövding. However, very bulky and heavy headgear can get in the way and may impede the airbag inflating around the head. By “impede”, we mean it might take longer for the airbag to attain the right position around the head, or it might not reach all the way over the forehead.

The following hats and headgear are not a problem: a cap, a hat with or without a brim, a knitted hat with or without a soft bobble, a veil or headscarf (always wear your headscarf inside Hövding).

If you are uncertain about a particular hat or kind of headgear, send us a photo at info@hovding.com and we will be happy to advise!

Can I wear any kind of hairstyle with Hövding?

Most hairstyles work perfectly with Hövding. The following hairstyles are no problem: short hair, bob, long flowing hair, ponytail, braids and small hairdos such as a French twist or a small bun.

However, very bulky, rigid and heavy hairstyles can get in the way and may impede the airbag inflating around the head. By “impede”, we mean it might take longer for the airbag to attain the right position around the head, or it might not reach all the way over the forehead.

The following hairstyles could pose a problem: a very rigid mohawk (if your hair isn’t too rigid, it shouldn’t be a problem), a very big afro and big, loose dreadlocks that don’t fit inside the collar.

Regarding dreadlocks: Measure your neck and your dreads with a tape measure. If your neck including your dreads has a circumference of less than 45 cm (17¾ inches), there’s no problem wearing Hövding. But always keep your dreadlocks inside the collar when you’re cycling. Big, loose dreadlocks that don’t fit inside the collar are too heavy for the airbag to push out of the way and be able to position itself correctly around your head. A knot of dreadlocks high on top of your head will occupy the space in the inflated airbag where your head should be. If the circumference is bigger than 45 cm, your dreadlocks are unfortunately too big for you to be able to wear Hövding.

If you are uncertain about a hairstyle, send us a photo at info@hovding.com, and we will be happy to advise!

I wear glasses. Can I use Hövding?

Yes.

Collar and cover

How flexible is Hövding? Can I pack it down tightly?

You can fold Hövding up and put it in a bag. Just make sure it is not positioned in such a way that the battery button is kept pushed in by mistake. That might result in Hövding being discharged the next time you need to use it.

Can I glue or sew things onto the fabric of the collar or cover?

Not onto the collar itself, as that might damage the airbag inside. The cover is not as sensitive, though. You can attach your own badges etc. to that.

Can I sew my own cover and use that with the collar?

No. The functionality stated is only guaranteed with the original covers.

Can I wear the collar without a cover?

Yes. But we recommend using a cover, since the collar is not washable.

What do I do if the collar gets dirty?

The collar can be cleaned carefully with a damp cloth. The cover can be washed according to the washing instructions shown on them.

How waterproof is Hövding?

Hövding can be worn in the rain, but it should not be washed or immersed in water. The removable covers are washable. The collar can be cleaned carefully with a damp cloth.

How much does Hövding weigh?

Hövding 2.0:
It takes about 3 hours to charge the battery completely.

How do I know if the battery is low?

LEDs at the front of the collar indicate the battery level.  An acoustic signal will make you aware in good time that the battery needs to be charged. From the first warning, you have approximately 1 hour of battery time left.

How long does the battery last?

Hövding 1.0:
When activated, the battery life is approximately 18 hours.

Hövding 2.0:
When activated, the battery life is approximately 9 hours.

How do I charge my Hövding?

You charge your Hövding by connecting the USB cable supplied in an external charger with a USB port (such as the ones supplied with all smartphones/tablets).

Traveling with Hövding

Can I ship my Hövding by air freight?

Yes. Hövding do not need to be shipped as dangerous goods. Hövding must be packed in strong rigid outer packaging with a total maximum gross weight of 40 kg.

Can I bring my Hövding onboard an aircraft?

Hövding conforms to the specification for avalanche rescue backpacks which are generally permitted aboard an aircraft according to the regulations by IATA (International Air Transport Association). More information about IATA’s rules here.

However, a permission from the airline is required since all airlines have different rules and regulations.

You must inform the airline about the Hövding before booking your flight, and show Hövding Self-inflating Bicycle Helmet Data Sheet which describes the content of the gas cartridge and the trigger. Please print Table 2.3.A from IATA’s Dangerous Goods Regulations and the Data Sheet from Hövding below and present them together with your Hövding at the security checkpoint.

Data Sheet

Table 2.3.A

Exception: Traveling to or from the United States
If you are traveling to or from North America, the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) will not allow you to bring Hövding onboard as it contains a pressurized cylinder. This general rule also applies to travellers who are changing flights in the United States.

How flexible is Hövding? Can I pack it down tightly?

You can fold Hövding up and put it in a bag. Just make sure it is not positioned in such a way that the battery button is kept pushed in by mistake. That might result in Hövding being discharged the next time you need to use it.

Service and maintenance

Can I replace parts if they break, like the zip?

No. If your Hövding is broken, please contact our Customer Service at info@hovding.com.

How durable is Hövding/what is its lifespan?

A Hövding lasts for 5-7 years, depending on how much it is being used.

Usually the fabric on the collar has the shortest lifespan. You will notice this through visible outer wear, such as cracked seams, broken zippers or holes in the fabric. Such wear means we can no longer guarantee your Hövding is working properly.

The component with the second shortest lifespan, is the battery. It can be charged 300 times, before its capacity gradually decreases. You will notice this by the battery life gradually shortening.

All other components in Hövding have a significantly longer lifespan than the battery. This is a conscious choice we made, to ensure that you would always be safe with your Hövding.

If you need help determining whether your Hövding is worn out or not, please contact our Customer Service at info@hovding.com.

In the event of an accident

Will my insurance pay for a new Hövding?

Some insurance companies will after an accident cover the cost of a new Hövding (minus the excess) through your home contents insurance. Contact your insurance company to check how they would handle your case.

In most countries, there is a Crash Replacement Program that offers a discount, ask your retailer for more information.

Can I still use my Hövding once the airbag has been deployed?

If your Hövding has been in an accident, it cannot be used again.

If your Hövding has been deployed, please contact us. In some cases, the accident data recorded in the black box inside the collar can be interesting and valuable to us in our on-going development work.

Environment and recycling

What environmental criteria does Hövding comply with?

The product complies with the EU directive RoHS (Restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) 2002/95/EC, the collection and recycling of such equipment in European Directive 2002/96/EC, the Packaging and Waste Directive 94/62/EC, and the EU regulation REACH (Registration, Evaluation and Authorisation of Chemicals) EG 1907/2006.

How should I recycle Hövding?

To recycle a Hövding that has been deployed or has worn out (without having been inflated), take it to a recycling centre. Hövding contains electrical and electronic components and batteries that must be separated as part of the recycling process.

Please note that you should never try to dismantle a by Hövding yourself! Even if it is deactivated (switched off), Hövding still contains active airbag components.

Other questions

What is the difference between Hövding 1.0 and 2.0?

Hövding 2.0 is adapted to more types of bikes, such as mini bicycles and folding bikes. It is also more comfortable and the design has been updated:

  • The sizes have been adjusted and are now slightly bigger than before.
  • The zip has been lengthened, which makes it easier to close it when you put on your Hövding.
  • The mechanics and electronics have been optimised, resulting in a lower total weight for the product. Hövding 2.0 weighs 100 g less than Hövding 1.0.
  • By pressing the rear of the activation button, you can see the battery level without first needing to switch Hövding on.
  • The USB port has been moved from the front of the product to the back and is concealed under the basic cover, eliminating the risk of chafing.
  • A built-in eye on the inside of the product allows you to hang up your Hövding when it’s not being used.
